Reflecting on the First Kootenay Women in Business Summit

A Legacy of Connection and Growth

In August 2024, the Creston Valley Advance published an article highlighting the upcoming Kootenay Women in Business Summit, a first-of-its-kind event designed to unite and empower female entrepreneurs in our region. As I sit down to write this reflection in February 2025, the words of that article resonate even more profoundly now that the summit has come and gone, leaving an indelible mark on the women who attended.

A Milestone for Women in Business

The inaugural Kootenay Women in Business Summit took place on September 19 and 20, 2024, at the Trinity United Church in Creston, BC. Spearheaded by psychotherapist and business leader Lynn Hiscoe, the event addressed the unique challenges faced by women in business—balancing entrepreneurship, family life, financial pressures, and emotional well-being.

“One of the things that I found in individual therapy, in these intimate conversations with women, is how everything has impacted them,” Hiscoe told the Creston Valley Advance. “I'm noticing a lot of younger women coming into business who have families, so they're dealing not only with all of the trials and tribulations of business but also with motherhood. It's taking its toll on the emotional well-being of women.”

This insight became the heart of the summit: a safe, supportive space where women could openly discuss these struggles and, more importantly, find tangible solutions through shared experiences, expert guidance, and collaboration.

A Gathering of Inspiration

The event featured a powerhouse lineup of speakers, including Ona Stanton, co-host and marketing expert; Andrea Warkentin, a leading real estate developer; and Dr. Kim Hine, a naturopathic practitioner. Local business owners Alanna Wilson, Amanda Goodman Lee, Jordana Champagne and Candi Huscroft brought their invaluable experiences to the table, sharing insights into resilience, innovation, and the power of collaboration.

Beyond business advice, the summit offered practical strategies for handling burnout, fostering financial independence, and navigating the evolving economic landscape. Many attendees walked away with actionable takeaways that are now shaping their businesses and lives.

Nourishment for the Body and Mind

One of the highlights of the event was the gourmet lunches prepared by local favourite Chef Maria Aryan, who showcased the region’s vibrant culinary scene. From farm-fresh ingredients to beautifully curated dishes, attendees were treated to meals that reflected the spirit of nourishment and community the summit embodied.

The Future of Kootenay Women in Business

Looking ahead, Hiscoe plans to expand the summit each year, bringing it to different communities in the Kootenays. This event was just the beginning of what promises to be a movement—one that unites and empowers women entrepreneurs throughout the region.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our event sponsors who made this vision possible: Honey Bee Zen, Scotia Bank, Denne Ahlefeld, Kootenay Savings, Clear Sky Consulting, and the Town of Creston. Their support ensured that this event could be accessible and impactful for all attendees.

A special thank you as well to Amanda McGregor of Ellie Rye Moments, whose photography captured the essence of the summit so beautifully. Her images serve as a testament to the energy, passion, and strength of the women who participated.
